Pole reelected to European People’s Party post |
Jacek Saryusz-Wolski was reelected deputy chairman of the European People's Party - the biggest grouping in the European Parliament.
The MEP, from Poland’s ruling Civic Platform, received the nomination during the party's congress in Bonn. Belgian politician Wilfried Martens was reelected its chairman.
Saryusz-Wolski has held the post for the last three years. Sixteen candidates competed for ten posts of the party's deputy chairmen.
Speaking afterwards, Saryusz-Wolski said it is important for a representative of Poland to be present in the party's presidium due to certain aspects of its European policy.
Among them, the Pole mentioned energy security, the Union's eastern policy and transatlantic partnership. Saryusz-Wolski also stressed that the presidium of the European People's Party is a body which defines the strategy of the biggest grouping in the European Parliament.
Fourteen hundred delegates are participating in the European People's Party Congress in Germany, among them several heads of states and governments including PM Donald Tusk and chancellor Angela Merkel.
