Sopot knows how to get money out of Brussels |
The coastal city of Sopot, the coastal towns of Hel and Nadarzyn and a village in the suburbs of Warsaw were the most successful at winning over the EU subsidies.
The Rzeczpospolita daily has checked which Polish cities, towns and villages receive most money from the EU funds in the last three years. Between 2007 and 2009 Poland received in total 42 billion zloty (10.8 billion euro) from the EU subsidies on local projects.
According to the ranking, the distribution of EU grants in Poland has been very uneven. On one hand, there are localities which received enough money to build roads and waterworks or renovate schools and hospitals, but there were also villages, where financial support from the EU limited to job-related projects for the unemployed.
Hel, located on the Baltic cost, managed to pull out most money from the EU budget, i.e. 10,250 zloty (2,640 euro) per person and another coastal city – Sopot - received 5,100 zloty (1,300 euro) per person. Nadarzyn, a village situated 20 km from Warsaw, won over 8,500 zloty (2,200 euro). The average amount of EU subsidies amounted to 1,100 zloty (280 euro) per person.
